Orlean
“Orlean is the pulp of the fruit from the tree Bixa orellana, which is cultivated primarily in South America and Zanzibar. The fruit is the carrier of the orlean pigment. It is extracted by crushing the fruit and allowing it to ferment. Once the mash has been separated from the hulls and other impurities, it is dried and traded in grain form.” – Excerpt from VIOLIN VARNISHES by Josef and Reiner Hammerl, page 47. More information about orlean, its properties and use can be found in this book.
